Origin and evolution of language. Dialects, languages, language families. Relationships between languages and language families. Processes involved in language classification. Linguistic change. The comparative method and its use in historical reconstruction.
Prerequisite: Anthropology 2.3 or 16 or Linguistics 1 or permission of the chairperson.
